Dont say I didnt warn you. These are so crazy delicious, you better make them and then leave your house immediately to find other people to eat them with because if left alone with these, you WILL eat them all.

I was going to try and make a soft pretzel recipe from scratch. You know -dough making, yeast rising, flouring the countertop, kneading for 15 minutes – scratch. But then I remembered I had pizza dough in the freezer so… DUH.

It was Vegan Whole Wheat Pizza dough so these are healthy and I’m going with that. Of course you could use any pizza dough you want. Trader Joe’s has some fun and inexpensive options.

I also never said I was a master pretzel twister, hence the uneven soft pretzels but honestly that was part of the fun. A unique little shape for everyone. I got about 8 mini soft pretzels out of one pizza dough. You could definitely take this recipe and make pretzel bites or larger soft pretzels or twists or balls or buns or whatever. Just make them, I know you’ll love them.

Oh and P.S. I finally used my Nutiva Buttery Flavored Coconut Oil and I am obsessed. Tastes EXACTLY like butter. You gotta try it if you haven’t yet. I couldn’t stop thinking about movie theatre popcorn. Yes, I was stuffing soft pretzels in my face and still thinking about food. Don’t judge me. Actually, judge me. I deserve it.

Let’s get cooking! You’ll need about 20 minutes start to finish!

Ingredients:

1 packages of whole wheat pizza dough
4 cups of water
1/4 cup baking soda
Sea Salt
Vegan Butter or Coconut Oil

Cheezy Maple Mustard Sauce:
1 tbsp vegan mayo
1.5 tbs whole grain mustard
2 tbsp yellow mustard
2 tbsp maple syrup
1 heaping tbsp nutritional yeast
Directions:
1. To prepare: Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a medium pot and stir in baking soda until it’s disolved. Watch the pot, the baking soda acts quickly and will boil over.
2. Cut dough into 8 equal pieces. and roll each piece into a 8 inch rope. Twist into a pretzel shape. Place on baking sheet. Repeat until all your dough is twisted,
3. Gently place each raw pretzel into the boiling water and boil for about 1 minute.
4. While those boil, grease your baking sheet with melted oil/vegan butter
5. Remove dough from pot with a slotted spoon, drain off as much liquid as possible, and place back on the baking sheet.
6. Brush each pretzel with more vegan butter/oil and sprinkle with sea salt. I used black sea salt from Hawaii, so fancy huh? Taste the same as regular sea salt from Irvine, CA (insert eye roll)
7. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 – 12 minutes.
8. While those are baking, prepare your sauce by mixing all the ingredients in a small bowl.
9. Once your pretzels are golden brown remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes. These are best served warm but I ate them all day long and they tasted perfect until the last bite at 11pm… (insert winky face)
Enjoy it veganly much!
